LA 2024

Press and public debate in potential Olympic host cities is too often conducted in ignorance of the international Olympic system and its current preoccupations and challenges. That system is presently under severe institutional stress, and in the matter of future Olympic hosting it is in full crisis mode. This is the context in which the IOC must soon decide between Paris and Los Angeles for 2024. Based on his service as an executive member of the IOC commission that put the present bid procedures in place and his work for the failed American Olympic bids of New York and Chicago and on six other bids worldwide, University of Chicago professor and Olympic historian John J. MacAloon will suggest in his talk how the LA 2024 project is being situated and evaluated from the standpoint of international Olympism.

Seating is first come, first served! Panel discussion featuring LA 2024’s Joslyn Treece and LA84’s Wayne Wilson to follow presentation.
